Who our shop fitting is for

We fit out food retail of every size. Our shop fitters and refrigeration engineers work most often with:

What is included in a shop fit out

You can ask us for a single display fridge or for the whole shop. A full supermarket fit out from Alaska Cold includes:

  • A measured survey and a layout drawing showing aisles, shelving bays, checkouts and every refrigerated cabinet, with aisle widths that work for trolleys and wheelchair users.
  • Gondola shelving, wall bays, end bays and queue fixtures, supplied and assembled.
  • Display refrigeration: multideck chillers with or without doors, glass-door freezers, serve over counters, fruit and veg displays and drinks chillers.
  • Remote refrigeration where it pays: pipework to condensing units on the roof or in a plant area, so the shop floor stays cooler and quieter.
  • Checkout counters, till points and the shop fittings around them.
  • A walk-in cold room or freezer room in the stockroom, sized to your deliveries.
  • Commissioning of every cabinet, temperature checks and handover to your staff.
  • Planned maintenance and 24/7 repairs once you are trading.

Display fridges and display refrigeration

Display refrigeration is where most of a food shop's energy goes and where most of its chilled sales are made, so the choice of cabinet matters. Multideck chillers hold dairy, meat, ready meals and drinks at 0 to +4 °C and come in widths from about 1.25 m to 3.75 m, open fronted or with glass doors. Fitting doors typically cuts a multideck's energy use by a third or more and keeps the aisle warmer for shoppers. Glass-door freezers hold frozen food and ice cream at -18 to -22 °C. Serve over counters keep fresh meat, fish, deli and cakes in view at 0 to +4 °C. Fruit and veg displays run warmer, at +8 to +12 °C, often with misting or humidity control.

Each cabinet can be a plug-in unit with its own compressor, or a remote cabinet piped to a condensing unit outside the sales area. For a handful of cabinets, plug-in is simpler; for a whole store, remote refrigeration usually costs less to run and is quieter. We specify the mix for your sales and your building, and our multideck display fridge guide explains the options in more depth.

Supermarket fit out from design to opening

A new store starts with the layout: where deliveries come in, where the cold room sits, how customers move from the entrance to the tills. We draw the shelving and refrigeration on the plan, agree it with you, then order cabinets and fixtures together so they arrive in one programme. For an existing shop we phase the work, often at night or in sections, so you keep trading while the aisles are refitted.

Lead times for shop fitting

You get a response to a quote request within one working hour during business hours and a free site survey soon after. Cabinets and shelving are usually available two to six weeks from order, depending on the model and whether doors or bespoke counters are included. On site, a single run of multidecks takes one to two days; a full supermarket fit out takes two to six weeks, depending on size and on how much of the shop stays open during the work.

Shop fitters for London and the rest of the UK

We are based at 167-169 Great Portland Street in central London and fit out shops across Greater London, Essex, Kent, Surrey and Hertfordshire, with larger projects anywhere in the UK. See our London page or the full list of areas we cover.

Why choose Alaska Cold for your shop fit out

  • One supplier for the shelving, the display fridges and the cold room, so the layout, the refrigeration and the electrics are planned together.
  • Refrigeration engineers, not only fitters: the people who install your cabinets are the people who service them.
  • A written, itemised quotation after a free survey, cabinet by cabinet, so you can compare it fairly.
  • Phased installation so an existing shop keeps trading.
  • 24/7 emergency call-outs once you open, because a failed chiller on a Saturday cannot wait until Monday.

How it works

Four steps from your first call to a working system.

  1. Site survey

We visit the site to measure the space and check access, power and the floor, then talk through what you need to store and at what temperature.

  2. Design and quotation

We design the system around your products, space and budget, and send a written quotation that sets out what is included.

  3. Installation

We install the panels, doors and refrigeration equipment, then test and commission the system before handing it over.

  4. Handover and maintenance

We show your team how to use it and offer maintenance contracts to keep it running reliably.

Frequently asked questions

What is included in a shop or supermarket fit out?

A fit out from Alaska Cold starts with a measured survey and a layout drawing showing aisles, shelving bays, checkouts and refrigeration. We then supply and install gondola and wall shelving, display fridges and freezers, serve over counters where you need them, checkout counters, and a walk-in cold room or freezer room for stock. Everything is commissioned and handed over ready to trade, and we can phase the work so an existing shop stays open.

Which display fridges does a convenience store need?

Most convenience stores need a run of multideck chillers for dairy, sandwiches, ready meals and drinks, one or two glass-door freezers for frozen food and ice cream, and often a drinks chiller near the till. Fruit and veg sell better from a chilled display with humidity control. We work out the metres of each type from your sales mix and floor plan, and recommend doors where they will cut your energy bill.

What is a multideck display fridge?

A multideck is the tall fridge with several shelves that lines a supermarket aisle, open fronted or with glass doors. Cold air is blown down the front as an air curtain to keep products at 0 to +4 °C. Cabinets usually come in widths from 1.25 m to 3.75 m and can run side by side to look like one unit. They are available as plug-in cabinets with their own compressor, or as remote cabinets connected to a condensing unit elsewhere.

Should I choose remote or plug-in display fridges?

Plug-in (integral) cabinets have the compressor built in, so they are quick to install and easy to move, but they put heat and noise into the shop and each one needs its own socket. Remote cabinets are piped to condensing units outside or in a plant area, which keeps the shop cooler and quieter and costs less to run across a large installation. For a few cabinets, plug-in usually wins; for a full supermarket, remote usually pays back.

Do you supply and install serve over counters?

Yes. Serve over counters are the glass-fronted refrigerated counters used for fresh meat, fish, deli, cheese and cakes. We supply straight and curved counters in standard lengths and made-to-measure sizes, with chilled wells at 0 to +2 °C for meat and fish or +2 to +4 °C for deli and dairy, and install them together with the shelving and counters around them. Our serve over counter guide covers what to check before you buy.

Do you fit out butchers, bakeries, delis and takeaways?

Yes. The same team fits out butchers' shops, bakeries and patisseries, delis, takeaways and fast food shops as well as supermarkets. The refrigeration changes with the trade: serve over counters and a meat cold room for a butcher, cake and patisserie displays for a bakery, kebab and drinks displays for a takeaway. See our pages for butchers and fishmongers and for bakeries and patisseries.

How much do display fridges cost?

The price depends on the cabinet type, its width, whether it has doors, and whether it is plug-in or remote. Remote cabinets cost less each but need pipework and a condensing unit. A short run of plug-in multidecks is a small project; a full supermarket with remote refrigeration is a major one. We quote cabinet by cabinet in a written, itemised quotation after a free survey, so you can see where the money goes and compare like with like.
