Freezer rooms and walk-in freezers

A freezer room is a walk-in insulated room that holds food frozen at -18 to -22 °C, with thicker panels, an insulated floor, a heated door frame and a low-temperature refrigeration unit, which is what sets it apart from a chilled cold room. Alaska Cold designs, supplies and installs walk-in freezer rooms and blast freezers for restaurants, shops, butchers, bakeries, warehouses and food producers across London and the UK, from a kitchen freezer of a few square metres to industrial frozen stores running at -40 °C, usually built on site in three days to a week.

Who a walk-in freezer room is for

What is included in a freezer room installation

  • A free site survey: floor, access, electrical supply (three-phase for larger units), and where the condensing unit can reject its heat.
  • Design and a written quotation setting out the room size, panel thickness, floor, door, refrigeration unit and running temperature.
  • Insulated wall, ceiling and floor panels, 100 mm or thicker, cut to size and assembled on site. The floor panel is not optional on a freezer room: without it the ground beneath freezes and heaves.
  • A freezer door with a heated frame so it never seals shut with ice, an internal safety release and a pressure relief port so the door opens easily after the fans have run.
  • A low-temperature condensing unit and an evaporator with electric defrost, sized for your room, your product and your door openings.
  • Digital controller with temperature alarm, internal lighting, and shelving or racking if you want it.
  • Commissioning, a pull-down test to temperature and handover to your team.
  • Maintenance contracts and a 24/7 repair line afterwards.

Freezer rooms, cold freezer rooms and low-temperature stores

Most freezer rooms run at -18 to -22 °C, the temperature UK food law requires for frozen food. Ice cream, some seafood and long-term storage may call for -25 to -30 °C, and some pharmaceutical and research products need -40 °C. Each step down needs thicker panels, a larger refrigeration unit and more careful defrost design, so tell us what you store and for how long and we will design to the right point rather than the coldest one. Where you also need chilled space, a combined room with a chilled section and a frozen section behind one wall is often the cheapest answer; see our cold rooms page.

Blast freezers and blast chillers

A freezer room stores food that is already frozen. A blast freezer freezes it fast, driving cold air at -30 to -40 °C over the product so that it passes through the danger zone quickly and the ice crystals stay small, which protects texture and flavour. A blast chiller does the same job down to +3 °C: UK food safety guidance asks for cooked food to be chilled from +70 °C to +3 °C within 90 minutes, and a blast freezer takes it on to -18 °C at the core within 240 minutes. We supply blast cabinets for kitchens and bakeries and walk-in blast freezer rooms for food producers, and most installations pair a blast unit with a freezer room for storage.

Made-to-order freezer rooms

Every room is modular and cut to size, so it fits the space you have: under a mezzanine, around a pillar, through a standard door, or outside under a canopy. Sliding doors save space in narrow stores; strip curtains and air curtains cut the cold lost on busy days; ramps and heavy-duty floors take trolleys and pallet trucks. Rooms can be taken down and rebuilt if you move premises.

Lead times for freezer room installation

You get a response to a quote request within one working hour during business hours and a free site survey soon after. Once the order is confirmed, panels and low-temperature equipment usually arrive within two to four weeks. Building the room takes three days to a week for a standard freezer room, longer for a large store with a plant room, and we plan the pull-down so the room is at temperature when your stock arrives.

Freezer room installers for London and the rest of the UK

We are based at 167-169 Great Portland Street in central London and install freezer rooms across Greater London, Essex, Kent, Surrey and Hertfordshire, with larger projects anywhere in the UK. See cold room installation in London or the full list of areas we cover.

Why choose Alaska Cold for your freezer room

  • Freezer rooms are designed, installed and maintained by the same team, and the defrost, door heater and floor are specified properly from the start, which is where cheap freezer rooms fail.
  • A written, itemised quotation after a free survey, so you can see the panel thickness, the floor and the refrigeration unit before you commit.
  • More than 25 years of commercial refrigeration experience in the team.
  • 24/7 emergency call-outs, because a freezer failure is the most expensive breakdown a food business can have.

Tell us what you need to freeze or store and we will size the room for you. Request a free quote or read our cold room cost guide for what affects the price.

Every room is designed around your products, space and access, so the figures above are typical rather than fixed.

How it works

Four steps from your first call to a working system.

  1. Site survey

We visit the site to measure the space and check access, power and the floor, then talk through what you need to store and at what temperature.

  2. Design and quotation

We design the system around your products, space and budget, and send a written quotation that sets out what is included.

  3. Installation

We install the panels, doors and refrigeration equipment, then test and commission the system before handing it over.

  4. Handover and maintenance

We show your team how to use it and offer maintenance contracts to keep it running reliably.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a freezer room cost?

A freezer room costs more than a chilled room of the same size: thicker panels, an insulated floor, a heated door frame, a larger low-temperature condensing unit and electric defrost all add to the price. Size, running temperature and site access matter most. A small walk-in freezer for a kitchen is a modest project; a warehouse freezer room with a plant room is a major one. We quote after a free survey, and our cold room cost guide explains the factors.

What is the difference between a freezer room and a cold room?

Temperature. A cold room, or chiller, holds food above freezing at 0 to +4 °C. A freezer room holds it frozen at -18 to -22 °C. That difference means a freezer room needs thicker insulation (usually 100 mm or more), an insulated floor so the ground beneath does not freeze and heave, a heated door frame so the door does not seal shut with ice, and a refrigeration unit built for low temperatures with an electric defrost system.

What is the difference between a blast freezer and a freezer room?

A freezer room stores food that is already frozen. A blast freezer freezes it: fans drive air at -30 to -40 °C over the product so that it passes through the danger zone quickly, typically from +70 °C to -18 °C at the core within four hours, which keeps ice crystals small and texture intact. A blast chiller does the same job down to +3 °C within 90 minutes, as UK food safety guidance asks. Most kitchens and food producers run a blast unit alongside a freezer room.

Can you install a walk-in freezer in my premises?

In almost every case, yes. A modular walk-in freezer can be built inside an existing kitchen, stockroom or warehouse, or outside under a canopy, with panels cut to fit the space. We need a reasonably level floor, a route in for the panels, an electrical supply (three-phase for larger units) and somewhere to put the condensing unit where it can reject heat. The free survey checks all of this before we quote.

Which condensing unit does a freezer room need?

A low-temperature condensing unit sized for the room's volume, its running temperature, how much product goes in and how often the door opens, matched to an evaporator with electric defrost. Small freezer rooms can use a monoblock unit; larger rooms use a split system with the condensing unit outside or in a plant area. We size and specify it for you. Our guide to chiller and condensing units explains how the parts fit together.

Do you build industrial freezer rooms?

Yes. We design and install industrial freezer rooms and frozen cold stores for food producers, wholesalers, cash and carry warehouses and distribution sites: rooms with pallet racking, forklift access, sliding doors, several evaporators and remote plant. These projects start with a design meeting about throughput, storage density and how goods move in and out. See our commercial cold storage page for larger installations.

How should a freezer room be maintained?

Have it serviced at least twice a year. The defrost heaters, timers and drains, the door heater and seal, the evaporator and condenser coils and the refrigerant charge all need checking, because a fault in any of them ices the room up and overloads the compressor. Between visits, keep the door shut, check the seal and door heater weekly and log the temperature daily. Our maintenance contracts cover all of this.
